Waking Ned Divine

1.  What was the ethical dilemma faced by Ned's friends?  Explain, in your opinion, the situational ethics displayed in the movie and give 5 scenes or situations that best illustrate ethical dilemmas and define situational ethics in each of the 5 scenes.

Ned Devine did win the lottery, he just happened to die from the shock of it.  The first ethical dilemma that they faced was figuring out was who had the winning ticket. They threw a dinner party and invited everyone that had purchased a lottery ticket and still didn’t find out who won it. Another example would be when Jackie went to Ned's house, after discovering he was the only one missing from the chicken dinner and to his surprise found him dead with the lottery ticket in his hand. This was an irony of emotions for him but I think he was sad for his friend; however he seemed more excited over the lottery ticket and the probability of claiming the money. Another example would be when Maggie was tempted to marry Pat for financial security for her and her son, though she loved Finn. Also, when Michael chooses to play Ned for the lottery representative showed even greater lack of moral standards. I also thought that the scene where Jackie decided that it wasn't right for him to collect all of the money was a good example of an ethical dilemma.

2. I found myself booing or cheering for several of the cast...who were the good guys or bad guys in this movie for you?  State three good and 3 bad that emerge in this movie and tell me why this is so (6 total).

The bad:

Michael- because he pretended to be Ned to get the money.

Jackie- because he was so greedy throughout the movie.

Lizzy Gwen- because she seemed so hateful and mean.

The good:

Annie- because in the end she realize what they were doing was wrong.

Pig Finn- because he was just in love with Maggie.

The Priest- because he seemed generally kind and caring.

 3.      Was the welfare of the community worth the 'sin' or illegal activity in the movie?  Explain why.

No, I believe it wasn’t worth it. Although the little town wasn’t that wealthy, they seemed to have a simple life. Yes, they probably benefited from the money, but sometimes it not the money in life that makes you happy it the simple things.
